What will I get out of a consulation?
I take a holistic approach to nutritional counseling treating each person according to his/her own needs, lifestyle, and goals. That means that what I offer changes according to what my clients need.
I typically review possible food/medications interactions, supplement/medications interactions, food/supplement interactions, and supplement/supplement interactions when necessary. When appropriate I also recommend more appropriate supplementation regimens. I try not to push supplements too much, but will suggest something when I feel that a person will benefit from it.
Many people do not have a very good idea of what foods and how much of those foods they should actually eat. When I counsel a person in this situation, we typically create a menu together consisting of their preferred foods in more appropriate proportions and combinations. This includes a review of how much that person should actually be eating in a day and at each meal/ snack. We may spend a fair amount of time on portion control when necessary. Not everyone needs this though, so I don't do this with everyone.
Sometimes I discuss what to eat and when as well as other behaviors necessary achievement of goals discussed at the beginning of the session. I sometimes also help devise a specific plan with goals and guidelines for safe and effective exercise. If exercise is not a concern, I may discuss other behaviors that may need to be addressed in order to achieve the desired effect. Although I never plan to do so, usually a fair amount of time is spent addressing the many misconceptions that people have regarding with diet and health. I do not tell people to never eat a certain food again. Rather, I focus on including certain foods. I do not give people plans that offer quick fixes since they rarely result in long term maintenance of weight or health goals. Instead I focus on small changes (behavior modifications) that will ultimately result in improved quality of life through diet and health related behaviors.
If there is something that you are looking for that I have not addressed, I urge you to ask if I can help you with that specific need.
